Posted by: chris on Wednesday, October 01, 2008 - 12:52 PM
Waverley Council Waverley's mayoral meeting was held last night, with the Greens Indigenous Cr. Dominic Wy Kanak the nominee for mayor from the three Greens councillors with 3 ALP councillors in support.

The other nominee was the Liberal's Sally Betts with five Liberals and Miriam Guttman-Jones, a conservative independent, in support. Betts name was chosen from the box, and the Liberals went on to win the deputy mayor's position in the same fashion.

Global: Bush's banks plan - who will benefit?
Posted by: Nouriel Roubini on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 12:00 PM
Money

Is Purchasing $700 billion of Toxic Assets the Best Way to Recapitalize the Financial System?
No! It is Rather a Disgrace and Rip-Off Benefitting only the Shareholders and Unsecured Creditors of Banks

Whenever there is a systemic banking crisis there is a need to recapitalize the banking/financial system to avoid an excessive and destructive credit contraction. But purchasing toxic/illiquid assets of the financial system is not the most effective and efficient way to recapitalize the banking system.

NSW: Labor has learnt nothing from Saturday's electoral drubbing
Posted by: Sylvia Hale on Monday, September 15, 2008 - 10:50 AM
Political Donations NSW Greens MP and planning spokesperson Sylvia Hale says the government has learned nothing from Saturday's electoral drubbing after new Planning Minister Kristina Kenneally refused the Greens MPs demand for an independent review of six major development decisions by former Planning Minister Frank Sartor that were favourable to ALP donors.

"It is disappointing that new planning Minister Kristina Kenneally has declined to instigate an independent review of these decisions. Labor has clearly not heard the very loud message that the community delivered at Saturday's local elections," Ms Hale said.

NSW: NSW residents willing to help fund local govt climate measures

Global Warming A Galaxy poll released today by the Greens found overwhelming support for a $25 per year levy to help pay for council climate saving measures, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: "The poll revealed that 69% of voters are prepared to pay the additional amount to increase spending on solar energy generation, bike paths and water recycling technology.

"In the lead up to the state-wide council elections next weekend, addressing climate change is at the forefront of the minds of the majority voters.

Housing New statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics released today show a 16.8 per cent increase in families with children experiencing homelessness.

"These figures are outrageous, given that Australia has consistently experienced economic growth over the 2001-2006 period under examination by the ABS," said Greens Senator Scott Ludlam.

National: Luxury Car Tax fails but reference to Henry Review stands
Posted by: Christine Milne on Thursday, September 04, 2008 - 10:50 AM
Transport Despite the failure of the Luxury Car Tax in the Senate, the Greens today urged the Government to move ahead with investigating a new tax incentive scheme to make green cars cheaper for all Australians.

In addition to exemptions for fuel efficient cars that Australian Greens climate change spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne, had negotiated with the Government, the Treasurer agreed to refer to the Henry Taxation Review consideration of the Greens' proposal to phase out the Luxury Car Tax and replace it with a tax based on vehicle fuel inefficiency. This commitment was made in the Second Reading debate yesterday and the Government must stand by it.

NSW: Parties exploit funding loopholes - voters left in dark on donation sources
Posted by: Lee Rhiannon on Thursday, September 04, 2008 - 06:35 AM
Political Donations Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said the latest data from the NSW Election Funding Authority reveals that while Labor has received millions of dollars in donations, voters at the coming local government election will not know who is bankrolling the candidates until 2009. (Sydney Morning Herald 4 September 2008 page 7)

"The figures show Premier Iemma's talk of donations reform is cheap and that he has failed to close the door on corporate donations," Ms Rhiannon said.

"The bulk of the donations for the local government election will be contributed in the weeks leading up to September 13. This money will not be publicly disclosed until February next year.
